About

Nula: Butterflies Rise is a decision-making game that explores the experience of living with anxiety.

Inspired by puzzle adventure games of the early 90s like Myst, the surreal comedy of Flann O'Brien, and the author's experience of living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Nula creates an immersive textual experience, an insight into the daily struggle anxiety can be.

The vinyl crackles. On comes the voice of Dirk Jennings, a cornish folk singer.

(Sad Sad Country Songs class: nolink underline)

‘We’re having a couple, man’, he said sighing.
‘Just a couple, any road, I’m driving’.
After a couple I came back with grin and loaded tray,
‘I know I know I know, I know, I know’, I said,
But I never see you, anyway,
One more and on your way.

So I get enough in me to light a candle in the gloom
To get me home,
Till I can plod like a panted prince about my room
To an old familiar tune
In the only the place I feel I really belong
With my sad sad country songs.

When he managed to get away
The room started to sway
And shmasjdkajshlkjdslfkjhlsadkdown
I had a breakthrough I had to write down
But the last gulp of the black stuff burst the banks
And brought me face-to-face with Armitage Shanks

So I get enough in me to light a candle in the gloom
To get me home,
Till I can totter, panted like prince about my room
To an old familiar tune
In the only the place I feel I really belong
With my sad sad country songs.

Sorry, I didn’t realise it was so loud.
Of course, I’ll turn it down.

So I get enough in me to light a candle in the gloom
To get me home,
Till I can plod like a panted prince about my room
To an old familiar tune
In the only the place I feel I really belong
With my sad sad country songs.
